Hear yourself say “Can’t wait for our little one to crawl, walk, ride a bike, play sport”. As parents we’ve all been there wishing these milestones away instead of enjoying now! Every milestone is a magical moment for any parent and playing sport is the milestone some parents have been waiting for.
“My little one’s going to be a soccer player, he’s only 2 but he’s so good at kicking a ball”. Some children have a natural hand/eye coordination and that’s fantastic. What we need to develop in the early years as well as the gross motor skills of throwing, catching and kicking is the fundamental movement skills/bilateral intergration & crossing the mid line such as running, jumping, balance, strength, reaching across the body and using both sides of the body. All these activities have a major impact on their everyday lives including cognitive learning.
This thrown in with some balls is a recipe for Fun & Success!
Start Young & Make it Fun! I love to see a 3yr old that can kick or throw a ball with such power but what I love to see more is their development. So many times I’ve seen children unable to jump and within weeks jumping with ease. Or children who struggle to kick or throw within weeks scoring a goal and throwing a ball a distance.
Sport should be fun whatever age and the younger we teach them the better. Learning these fundamental skills in a fun and engaging environment creates happy and confident children.
